Gas Mileage Cost Calculator

Your trip

Per trip; one-way distance when Round trip is on. Up to 100,000 miles or 160,934.4 km.

Changing units converts your distance.

Equivalent to 0.5–100 L/100 km. Use your measured or assumed average.

US MPG uses US gallons. Unit changes convert your efficiency.

Zero is allowed. Maximum equivalent to 1,000 per liter.

Converts the price without changing currency.

No exchange rates. Changing currency keeps your numeric price and labels it with the new currency.

1–10,000 whole instances of this trip. For recurring travel, this is the number per selected period.

When enabled, the entered distance is one way. Each trip includes the return leg; distance is doubled once.

Calculation breakdown

Total distance: 482.8 km × 1 return-leg factor × 1 trips = 482.8 km.

Fuel required: 482.8 km × 9.8 L/100 km ÷ 100 = 47.32 L.

Estimated cost: 47.32 L × 0.92 USD/L = $43.63.

About this calculator

Estimate trip fuel use, fuel cost and repeated driving costs with economy and price comparisons.

How to use the Gas Mileage Cost Calculator

Enter distance, average fuel efficiency, fuel price and number of trips. Turn on Round trip if your distance is one way and you return along the same distance. Valid edits update immediately. Miles/kilometers, economy units and price basis convert the value when switched. Complete an invalid field before changing its unit.

Choose a frequency below the main results for repeated travel. Number of trips then means trips per day, week or month. Compare another efficiency, enter a better efficiency for modeled savings, or try a different fuel price. Each scenario keeps the main trip pattern fixed.

Reset restores 300 miles, 24 US MPG, 3.49 USD per US gallon, one trip, Round trip off and One time. It also restores comparison economy to 30 US MPG, better economy to 32 US MPG and scenario price to 4 USD per US gallon, and removes query state without reloading.

Methodology and fuel-cost formula

All arithmetic uses kilometers, liters per 100 kilometers and selected currency units per liter. Total distance = entered distance × (2 for round trip, otherwise 1) × number of trips. Fuel needed in liters = total kilometers × L/100 km ÷ 100. Estimated fuel cost = liters needed × price per liter. Cost per kilometer = cost ÷ total kilometers; cost per mile = cost per kilometer × 1.609344.

One mile is 1.609344 kilometers; one US gallon is 3.785411784 liters. L/100 km = (100 × 3.785411784) ÷ (US MPG × 1.609344). For km/L, L/100 km = 100 ÷ km/L. Price per liter = price per US gallon ÷ 3.785411784. Imperial MPG is not supported.

For recurring travel, annual trip instances = number of trips × 365 for daily, 52 for weekly, or 12 for monthly. Annual cost = cost of one trip instance × annual trip instances. Monthly average = annual cost ÷ 12; weekly average = annual cost ÷ 52. Each instance already includes the return leg when selected. No recurring estimates are produced for One time.

Comparisons subtract current fuel cost from scenario fuel cost. Savings subtract the better-economy cost from current cost. Only presentation is rounded: fuel and distances to at most two decimals, money to two decimals. Small nonzero amounts can display as zero. Unit switches retain numerical precision, so converted inputs may show additional digits.

Worked example: 300 miles at 24 US MPG

With 1 trip, no return leg and a price of $3.49 per US gallon, fuel needed is 300 ÷ 24 = 12.5 US gal. Multiplying by the fuel price gives $43.63. The cost per mile is $0.15 after display rounding.

The same distance is 482.8 km, using 47.32 L. These values are generated by the actual calculator model. One time is selected, so this example makes no recurring-cost assumption.

Assumptions and limitations

Fuel economy and fuel price remain constant throughout each scenario. Traffic, driving style, load, terrain, weather and idling can change actual consumption. Enter an average that reflects your driving. The model estimates fuel spending only; purchase price, maintenance, insurance, depreciation and financing are excluded. It is not a route planner, fuel-price finder or vehicle database.

Implementation limits use the same physical bounds in every unit: 0.001–160,934.4 km per entered trip; 0.5–100 L/100 km; 0–1,000 currency units per liter; and 1–10,000 whole trips. These broad arithmetic limits are project choices, not typical driving ranges. Zero price is valid; zero distance or zero economy is not. Use dot decimals without grouping, hex notation or exponents.

USD, EUR, GBP, CAD and AUD are labels for your entered amount. Changing currency preserves the number and performs no exchange conversion. Planning averages use fixed periods per year, not calendar dates, leap years or a workday schedule. For five commuting days a week, choose Weekly and five trips.

Privacy and sharing

Calculations and edits stay in tab memory. There are no fuel-price or exchange-rate requests, tracking, cookies or browser storage. Copy result produces plain text. Share and Copy link include validated main inputs and frequency on this same calculator page; optional scenarios are not saved. Opening a shared link sends its query to the hosting site as part of normal page loading, and anyone with the link can read those values. Query values never change this page’s canonical URL or metadata.

Gas Mileage Cost Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

In US units, divide miles by US MPG to find US gallons, then multiply by price per US gallon. The calculator converts inputs into one metric model so mixed unit selections describe the same physical trip.

Does Round trip double the number of trips?

No. It doubles the entered distance once for each trip instance. A 20-mile one-way distance, five trips and Round trip on means 200 miles total.

Does MPG mean US or Imperial MPG?

US MPG only. A US gallon is 3.785411784 liters. Do not enter an Imperial MPG figure unchanged; use US MPG, L/100 km or km/L.

Why does a lower L/100 km value mean better economy?

L/100 km measures fuel consumed over a fixed distance, so lower is better. US MPG and km/L measure distance per unit of fuel, so higher is better. Switching units converts the efficiency instead of relabeling it.

How can I estimate five weekly commutes?

Enter your one-way commute distance, set Number of trips to five, turn on Round trip and choose Weekly. This models five return journeys each week and 260 per year. Monthly and weekly results are annual planning averages.

Why are there no monthly costs for One time?

A single trip does not establish how often you drive. Choose Daily, Weekly or Monthly to supply that assumption; the calculator will then apply your trip count per period.

Does choosing EUR convert a USD fuel price?

No. Currency is only a label and formatting choice. The numeric price stays unchanged. Enter the price you want to use in the selected currency; no exchange rates are available.

Can I enter a fuel price of zero?

Yes. Fuel cost and cost per distance become zero, while fuel needed still reflects the distance and efficiency. The model never divides by fuel price.

Are better-economy savings guaranteed?

No. Modeled fuel-cost savings hold driving distance and price constant. Real consumption and prices can change. The estimate excludes vehicle purchase price and every other ownership expense.

What is included when I share or reset?

Shared links contain distance, efficiency, price, their units, currency, trips, Round trip and frequency. Invalid or incomplete links load the default example with a notice. Reset restores all documented defaults, including comparison and what-if values, and clears the query on the same page.
